BeezelBub

BeezelBub is an action-exploration game inspired by the 'Metroidvania' sub-genre, where you play as a devilish knitted toy called Bub, who explores the land of TrinketTown obtaining power-ups, traversing obstacles, and fighting monsters.

This game was developed entirely by myself with very few external assets as part of my Final Year Project on the university of Plymouth Game Arts and Design course, made alongside my dissertation on Level Design in the Metroidvania genre.

My Primary Focus:

  • Level Design

Everything Else:

  • C# Programming (Unity)

  • 3D Modelling and Rigging (Maya)

  • Texturing (Substance Painter & Designer)

  • Voice Over & Editing (Audacity)

My World Design:

  • 3 Main Areas - The Wailing Workshop, Maker's Mountain, and The Sewer of Stitches.

  • Hub area in the middle of it all, TrinketTown.

  • Pathways leading into each area only accessible once certain power-ups are acquired.

  • Each area has a clear colour palette.

  • Each area has a theme in shape.

  • Each area has their own platforming game mechanics.

The Wailing Workshop:

  • Lots of square shapes.

  • Colour Palette of browns, golds and reds.

  • Narratively it's the home of Wurmwood, and as such the building is shaped like his hat, in addition to many props such as bookcases and fences.

  • Coloured doors and keys soft lock the players progress through the workshop

  • Platforming revolves around cogs and damaging acid pools.

  • Player must climb across spinning cogs and maintain balance as they are constantly rotating.

  • Cog platforms can be stood on for a time, before they retreat back into the walls.

  • The Elevator takes the player between floors of the library.

  • Player obtains the Double Jump upgrade at the end, allowing access to Maker's Mountain.

Maker's Mountain

  • Lots of triangular shapes.

  • Colour Palette of greys and blues.

  • Platforming revolves around timing jumps well with falling platforms and slides.

  • Lots of high jumps that aren't possible without double jump.

  • Bouncy clouds that help the player gain more height.

  • Falling rock platforms push the player to keep moving or fall down.

  • Player obtains the Fire Slam upgrade at the end, allowing access to the Sewer of Stitches.

  • Upon acquiring Fire Slam the player has quick shortcuts back down the mountain.

The Sewer of Stitches

  • Lots of circular shapes.

  • Colour palette of blacks and greens.

  • Platforming revolves around toxic waste that has flooded the sewers.

  • Toxic waste can be drained using valves scattered throughout each section of the sewer as it is uncovered.

  • Most dangerous platforming in the game, some platforms are very slim and easy to miss when jumping between.

  • The final valve opens a doorway to the right of the Sewer's entrance which leads to the  final boss of the game, the Grudger.

Character Concepts to Creation:

  • Bub, the main character controlled by the player, is rigged and animated by myself. One eye, one horn, and one tooth are bigger than the other.

  • Wurmwood, is an NPC who provides the first key into the Wailing Workhshop. He is tall and slender, with a hat that reflects a lot of his home.

  • Duno, is an NPC who first introduces the player to the game, and warns of the first enemy type.

  • Humphrey VI, is an NPC who introduces the collectables of the game, marbles that create more homes in the landscape of TrinketTown.

  • Spewers, are the first enemy type and shoot out acid-like projectiles at the player.

  • Stretchers, are the second enemy type and slide towards the player and attack with their tentacle-like arms.

  • The Grudger, is the final boss of the game and fires out a ghostly beam that slowly drains the players health.

Here is the trailer for BeezelBub, which gives a glimpse into how the game looks and plays!
